The annual budget of the Thane Corporation has been presented for the year 2008-09 which is Rs 1100 cr and is devoid of any hike in the taxes. As compared to last year, the budget allocation has increased by 31.74%. While last year, the TMC had allotted Rs 835cr, this year they have assigned Rs 1100cr. With 100 % implementation of last financial year’s budget, the TMC administration says that they have gained 101 % revenue and this year they will certainly gain 105% revenue, which is for the first time in the past seven years. The administration says that the expected revenue would be achieved without any hike in taxes while catering to the needs of our citizens. The Corporation expects its octroi collection to increase by Rs 34 cr. It expects an income of Rs 120 cr from Property tax, Rs 70 cr from water tax, Rs 74 cr from development charges and Rs 54 cr from other sources such as road digging and re-filling charges, fire department, advertisement charges. The Corporation also anticipates revenue of Rs 92.89 cr from loans and Rs 184.97 cr from government grants. Rs 129.97 crores was unused from the previous budget. The Corporation has earmarked Rs 102.60 cr for purchasing water from BMC, MIDC and STEM. This would come as a relief for Thaneites who have been plagued by water woes and irregular water supply.
