After having cleared the city roads and streets of private hoardings the Thane Municipal Corporation is considering sparing 20 hoardings that are still left out. The last remaining hoardings will be used to spread important civic messages and create awareness about the key civic issues amongst the masses till the legal tangle surrounding the road displays is over. Thane city has been cleared of more than 175 unauthorized hoardings during the past some months. The step was taken on the orders of the Mumbai high court following a writ petition filed by a city based Non Governmental Organization (NGO). A group of 20 hoardings however still remained to be cleared. The spot for the hoardings were allotted by the TMC to a private advertisement agency more than ten years ago. The agency was allowed to erect the hoardings and use them for ten years on Build Operate Transfer (BOT) basis. The cost of the project was around Rs one crore. After the expiry of the BOT period the agency was supposed to hand over the erected hoarding structure to the TMC for further use. The civic administration began toying with the idea of making further use of the hoardings that are part of its property now. The corporation would display pictures and writings on the 20 hoarding signboards to spread important civic messages like keeping the city clean and green.
