TRANSPORT MINISTRY WANTS YOUR SUGGESTIONS ON SCHOOL BUS SAFETY

school-bus-2Transport Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil who announced a few guidelines on school bus safety has given a week’s time for people to come up with ideas Every school bus should carry information about students’ blood groups and contact details of their parents so that emergency situations are managed better, Transport Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil has suggested. He asserted that the age of vehicles ferrying school children should not be more than eight years. The minister made public a new set of proposed guidelines for school buses at an open forum of school managements, PTA members, bus operators, MCGM and RTO and traffic authorities. Schools must eventually buy their own buses. Possibly, the government can give some concessions, the Minister has said. Vikhe-Patil – who aims to implement the rules from January – has given people a week’s time to come up with suggestions. Some draft guidelines met with opposition from bus operators, who wanted the age limit of vehicles to be 15 years and did not agree to the condition of posting female attendants on every bus. The Ministry has said that there would be more stringent checks on whether bus drivers and attendants can operate emergency equipment such as fire-extinguishers or use first aid boxes. People can list their suggestions on www.mahatranscom.in or write to Transport Commissioner Deepak Kapoor within a week. Bureau report – NMTV News.
