UAE celebrates New Year with Burj Khalifa fireworks even as luxury hotel burns up

The night of December 31st 2015 was expected to be as it has always been for the United Arab Emirates. Millions of tourists and residents of the Emirate came to the three popular sites where the biggest and magnificent fireworks takes place in Dubai, one of them being the Burj Khalifa.

While the stage was set for the clock to tick 12 ‘0’ clock, little did anyone know that the celebrations would turn rather bizarre. Just two hours before the fireworks were to take place, The Address Hotel in downtown Dubai, just a kilometre away from Burj Khalifa, caught on fire. As fire officials struggled to settle down the flames, conversation on social media shifted from #BeThere to #DubaiFire.

However, as the clock struck 12 midnight, the spirit of the people and New Year was not lost as Burj Khalifa lit up with hundreds of fireworks just like every year. As people were safely being removed from the luxury hotel, fireworks were unleashed at the tallest tower of the world.
