And there is update from the Bhiwandi power loom sector too. The sector has found mention in Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s speech. The announcement promises to bring relief to the sector. It may be recalled that last week NMTV News had covered a report on the dying powerloom industry in Bhiwandi. Speaking to NMTV’s Monika Bhosale, workers had shared their woes of load shedding that threatened the industry towards closure rendering thousands of workers jobless. Shortly a week after the report, the workers have heard some good news. Finance Minister P Chidambaram has proposed an allocation for the sprawling township 70 km from Mumbai as one of six centres to be developed as mega-clusters. In this Bhiwandi will be developed for powerlooms. Rs 70 crore has been sanctioned for infrastructure development and improving production. Bhiwandi has nearly 5.5 lakh powerloom units and 15 lakh workers, mostly migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The town contributes nearly 40 per cent of the national production from the powerloom sector. Picking Bhiwandi as one of the handloom, handicraft and powerloom mega-clusters also makes political sense: Bhiwandi is now a separate Lok Sabha seat, with a chunk of Muslims belonging to north India.
