UNITED NATIONS HUMAN DEVELOPMENT REPORTS SAYS “MUMBAI CITY IS BEST”

mumbai-city-1Mumbai is the best Indian city to live in, says the Mumbai Human Development Report (HDR) compiled by MCGM and the United Nations Development Programme 2009. The study considered factors like environment, public transport, perception of crime and safety and development while evaluating quality of life. Chennai is ranked second, followed by Bangalore, Panaji, Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chandigarh and Ahmedabad. The Human Development Report was unveiled by Mayor Shubha Raul and former municipal commissioner Dr. Jairaj Phatak. The report considers factors like pollution, safety and recreational options as a measure of socio-economic well-being. It also includes the impact of developmental projects on the environment. While environmental indicators included noise levels, quality of air and seawater, public transport was evaluated for ease and intra-city accessibility. The report was based on the 2001 census. Population and other factors have changed since then and chances are that the report may not reflect that. The report revealed that one in two Mumbaiites resides in slums. The global average is one in three, the HDR said. The report also traces the development of women in terms of health, gender equality, education and job opportunities. The gender ratio in Mumbai is 809 women per 1,000 men. In slums, this figure drops to 770 women per 1,000 men. The literacy rate among men is 82 per cent, while that of women is 72 per cent.
