UNMANNED NAVI MUMBAI COASTLINE POSES SECURITY THREAT – AN EXCLUSIVE REPORT

NMSecurity1Last week NMTV News had aired a report how the Mumbai terror attacks exposed the city’s weak underbelly in form of the porous coast line for terrorists came to Mumbai through the sea route. We highlighted why this is a reason to worry for neighboring city Navi Mumbai because if Mumbai seemed like an open invitation for terrorists, Navi Mumbai with an unmanned coast is all the more welcoming. Even while we were reporting on this vulnerable side of Navi Mumbai came the shocking report of Pakistani ID cards seized from Shedung village close to old Mumbai-Pune Expressway. In our previous weekend exclusive, NMTV News aired a report on how terrorists created terror in Mumbai with the most sophisticated weapons and ammunition that were transported without any trouble to the city via sea; and that is why there is reason to worry for Navi Mumbai. It may be recalled that the unmanned coastal belt of Navi Mumbai has been taken advantage of to execute terror activities in the past as well. The RDX transported to Mumbai through the sea during the ’93 Mumbai Blasts was through the Raigad coast. And despite the state knowing this for a fact, nothing has been done to man the coastline in Navi Mumbai. The situation is perhaps more serious than one imagines since the city has vital installations like Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation, JNPT, ONGC, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and even the RBI facing the Arabian Sea. Commissioner of Police Ramrao Wgah agrees that manning the coastline is a concern. In our report we had also brought together how the exit points from the city to Goa and Gujarat make it all the more a fertile breeding ground for illegal or even terrorist activities. Navi Mumbai has many exit points giving easy escape within minutes to Mumbai, Thane, Pune. We bring to you these exit points. Navi Mumbai can be entered from the Vashi Toll Naka. Anyone coming from Mumbai enters Navi Mumbai through the Vashi toll naka. Then there is the Airoli Check Naka across Mulund Expressway from where one can exit to Thane. On the third end, anyone who enters Navi Mumbai can take the main city highways and roads to get connected to the Mumbai Pune Expressway that will take one out of the city towards Pune. The fourth exit point is that old Mumbai Pune Highway and the fifth the National Highway 4 that connect one to either of Goa, Pune or Gujarat. And to add to all of this, the privilege of living an anonymous life according to Advocate Rahul Thakur is the single biggest reason for Navi Mumbai being the new choice of terrorists. In other words it could be a neighbor, a foreigner or just the youth with a decent-boy-next-door image who lives an anonymous life but could be a link to a terror activity in the making.
