Unnao rape victim accident: UP DGP says there was no negligence in security

Uttar Pradesh DGP OP Singh on Monday said that the police will conduct a fair and free probe into the accident of Unnao rape survivor, who was traveling to Rae Bareli along with other family members, leaving 2 people dead on Sunday.

“We’ll conduct a fair & free probe. Primary probe suggests it was purely an accident due to an overspeeding truck. Truck driver and owner have been arrested. If the family demands a CBI inquiry into the case, we’ll hand over the case to CBI,” Uttar Pradesh DGP OP Singh said on Monday.

On Sunday, a vehicle in which the survivor of Unnao rape case, her family and lawyer were travelling was hit by an over-speeding truck, killing two members while leaving her and one other injured in Rae Bareli on Sunday, police had said.

BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is the key accused in the rape case was arrested on April 13, 2018. Sengar, a four-time MLA, is lodged in the jail for allegedly raping the minor girl when she visited him for a job on June 4, 2017. The CBI had last year filed chargesheet against the MLA and several others.

The case had come to light after the victim allegedly attempted self-immolation outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s residence in Lucknow.

Speaking on the incident, UP Police DGP OP Singh said, “There was no negligence in her security. Due to lack of space in her vehicle, she requested the security personnel deputed for security not to accompany her to Raebareli yesterday.”

“The accident in Rae Bareli claimed the lives of the Unnao rape survivor’s mother and her aunt,” said Rajiv Krishnan, ADG Lucknow Zone, on Sunday.

“The Unnao rape victim’s family was travelling in their private car to meet a relative who is in jail. The vehicle met with an accident as it collided with a truck. Two women died in the accident while two others were injured. There were a total of four people in the vehicle. The victim and her lawyer have been injured,” Krishnan said.

Taking note that it is a sensitive case, the rape survivor was provided security cover last year.
