US, Secretary of State John F. Kerry has been fighting a cause for almost his whole political career, climate change issue. And this time he is adamant of the fact that he will make the people realize the danger of climate change so that they would step forward and demand from their political leaders to fight the cause. And this fact could easily be understood when Kerry was addressing students in Jakarta, Indonesia. Kerry main focus throughout the discussion was the affects and aftermath of climate change, the fact that how big industrialists are responsible for it and instead of understanding the problem and finding a solution, they always manage to win over the whole argument. Kerry also made the students realize that global warming is a result of human activities and if this activity wouldn’t be curbed soon then the whole world would have to face the mass destruction in ways of drought, famine, deadly storms or massive floods. In fact Kerry didn’t even hesitate on calling all those scientists who denies the truth as “shoddy scientists and extreme ideologues”. While addressing the students, Kerry made them realize that according to the scientists predictions, with the speed at which the ice caps are melting as a result of global warming, in that speed by the end of the century sea levels would be pushed three feet up putting more than half of Jakarta underwater and displacing millions of people worldwide. Their main occupation fishing would be completely destroyed while natural disasters like typhoon that had struck Philippines last year would become an active problem swiping off entire communities. ‘Today I call on all of you here in Indonesia and concerned citizens around the world to demand that resolve from your leaders. Speak out. Make climate change an issue that no political leader can ignore another day’ as been addressed by Kerry during his speech in Jakarta. Kiran Kidwai – International Desk, NMTV
