bandra-3The residents of Valmiki Nagar in Bandra have no idea why their slums were demolished by MCGM as they very well fall in the time period between 1995 to 2000, say the slum dwellers. Despite this, their slums were razed down by MCGM. A peaceful protest by slum-dwellers at Valmiki Nagar in Bandra (E) took an ugly turn when MCGM officials came to bulldoze 636 hutments to vacate the land for Mumbai University. The Bandra Kurla Complex police, reinforced by the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), beat up the protesting slum-dwellers with lathis provoking the latter to pelt stones. The homeless residents have no idea why their houses were demolished as they had the necessary documents with them. According to the locals, their houses were rebuilt under the Ambedkar Bal Vikas scheme. With a rise in realty prices, the cost of the land too increased and came under the eye of various builders. The residents allege that this is the reason why MCGM in nexus with private developers forced them to vacate their land. MCGM went for demolition of the slum following an interim order of the Bombay High Court. With cameraperson Vinayak Dalvi, Hansraj Kanaujia for NMTV News.
