CIDCO’s Urban Haat in CBD Belapur is hosting Vasant Mela 2010 from March 13 to March 21 where artists from different states will exhibit their handicrafts. Details with this report Handicraft, also known as craft work or simply craft is a type of work where useful and decorative devices or garments are made completely by hand or using only simple tools. The finest quality handicraft by artists coming from faraway places like Kashmir, West Bengal, Orrisa, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, are on sale in CIDCO’s Urban Haat in CBD Belapur under Vasant Mela 2010. We spoke with some of the vendors who enlightened us about their crafts. The vendor from Kashmir said that they have some of the best quality shawls for sale. He spoke about the Pashmina shawl which is made from the wool of Pashmina – a breed of goat from Tibet or neighboring areas and is worth Rs 25000/-. It is very soft and can be hand woven only by an experienced craftsman. The exhibition also shows the best traditional sarees from West Bengal. Some rare works can be found in this exhibition. One is from the craftsmen of Orissa where Ikkat work was done in which threads are first tie-dyed and then woven. We also spoke with a vendor selling curtains and sofa set covers made by women from Panipat in their spare time thereby adding to their income. Another craftsman from West Bengal spoke on his wares of mats of materials which were used to make curtains, water bottle covers and mobile covers as well. Along with enhancing the rich tradition and culture of India, the exhibition at Urban Haat is definitely a heart’s delight for Navi Mumbaikars. With cameraperson Kala Jadhav Jan Cabral for NMTV news.
