Forty five year old Vashi police inspector Sanjay Surve was awarded the Director General’s Insignia for outstanding bravery. He was awarded the honour for exceptional bravery in arresting robbers despite being injured in an incident that occurred in 2001. Sanjay Surve was presented the award on Maharashtra Day. In the year 2001, he arrested the leader of the notorious J K gang, Venkatesh Nair, along with his aides in a bank robbery case. Interrogating Nair also helped in solving 12 other bank robbery cases. These arrests even posed a danger to his life but the inspector set an example of bravery and courage. Alumni of Ruparel College, Sanjay Surve joined the police force as PSI in 1999. On receiving a hunch that dreaded robbers were hiding in a place in Chembur East, Surve accompanied by two police constables raided the place and arrested the robbers. Despite procuring injuries, Surve managed to put the criminals behind bars. The cop who feels deeply honoured says that now he shoulders a greater responsibility – that of continuing to being worthy of the recognition. With cameraperson Abhishek, Sudhir Sharma for NMTV.
