Following the orders of the new municipal commissioner Tukaram Munde Vashi ward office finally woked up to the menace of marginal space encroachment by the node’s shopkeepers. Action on notices served in 2013 was finally taken on Thursday .
Vashi ward officer Mahendra Singh Thoke led a team of antiencroachment department equipped with cutters and other equipment to sector 9 area of Vashi to undertake the drive.
The local shopkeepers were upset at the action questioning why the authorities had suddenly woken up to the state of affairs. The team however went about remove the grills and other extensions of the shopkeepers. Several removed the extensions themselves too.
Said Thoke, “Notices were sent to these establishments in 2013 under MRTP Act. The municipal commissioner has now ordered that the notices be cleared and hence the action was taken today. We will continue with the drive in the sector and also take up other areas in the next few days.”
He added, “Though t he shopkeepers are upset we did not face any opposition. In fact several of themselves removed the encroachments.”
Asked why there had been a delay of three years in taking action, Thoke said, “I am not aware of it as I took charge of the node only eight months ago. Repeat notices had been served on the establishments.”
