Union Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh filed his papers as Congress nominee for the Rajya Sabha poll slated on August 10. Vilasrao Deshmukh filed his nomination papers at Vidhan Bhawan in presence of Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, MPCC President Manikrao Thakre and Mumbai Congress Chief Kripashankar Singh. Election Commission had on July 23 issued notification for filling in three Rajya Sabha vacancies from Maharashtra. The vacancies were created due to the resignations of Sushilkumar Shinde, Praful Patel and Supriya Sule from the Upper House of Parliament after they were elected to the Lok Sabha in the recent general elections. Former Congress leader Govindrao Adik, who joined NCP earlier this year, and MLC Ranjitsinh Mohite Patil would be NCP nominees for the election. The 288-member Legislative Assembly is the electoral college for the elections. At present, the total strength of the Assembly is 278. The notification for all the three seats had been issued separately by the Commission. Each candidate requires 140 first preference votes to get elected to the House of Elders.
