And water woes continue to be reported from Navi Mumbai. According to an in-depth probe of the water from Morbe, the MPCB has concluded that water from Morbe Dam is indeed polluted. This comes as bad news from Navi Mumbaikars awaiting 24 hours water supply from Morbe dam. Reason being that the earlier reports of the Morbe water being polluted has been endorsed by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. According to reports villagers displaced by Morbe dam had settled on the periphery of the dam’s backwaters. Apart from bathing, washing clothes and fishing in the backwaters, the village panchayats had also constructed toilet blocks and crematoria on the banks of the lake. This was a major cause of pollution as drainage was directly discharged into the water. The first time when these reports hit the media, NMMC Commissioner Vijay Nahata went on record to state that someone was purposely maligning the image of the NMMC. However, it’s not even been one month to the Commissioner’s clarification, and the MPCB itself has confirmed that indeed water of Morbe is polluted. Sana Warsia – NMTV News.
