“We want punishment more severe than jail for builders doing illegal constructions”: Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan

Builders who violate norms and rules and think they can get away with it by bribing officials beware ! The state government is taking serious cognizance of the rising illegal construction and wants to ensure that there should be provisions of punishment more severe than just jail for builders who are doing illegal constructions.

The Chief Minister has said so in a debate during the on going state monsoon session. The illegal construction of skyscrapers on Palm Beach Road and in Mira-Bhayander town in the neighbouring Thane district has been echoing in the state assembly.

The Chief Minister said that they are studying whether there can be a new law that can be enacted or the present MRTP and BPMC Act can be amended with more strict punishments and penalties to deter builders from violating the Act.

It may be noted that presently the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act and Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation Act provides jail term in cases of violations by builders.
