After the Maharashtra government’s proposal to rename Mumbai’s Elphinstone Road as Prabhadevi and naming Oshiwara as Ram Mandir, the saffron party now wants to rename Marine Lines railway station as Mumbadevi.
On Sunday, BJP MLA Raj Purohit, who is local MLA of the area met Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis last week to press his demand. And, according to the reports, both have agreed to consider the proposal. In a letter written to the authorities, Purohit said a 500-year-old temple of the deity is in the vicinity. “Many stations in the city have been named after gods and goddesses whose temples are close to the station, the locals of the area around Mumbadevi temple have demanded for renaming Marine Lines station,” Purohit said.
The Maharashtra Assembly has sent a proposal to the railway authorities asking to rename the Elphinstone Road railway station as Prabhadevi, a deity of people in the area. However, the assembly passed a resolution approving the change in December last year but it still awaits the railway ministry’s nod. Before this the newly build Oshiwara station also renamed as ‘Ram Mandir’.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena too has demanded that south Mumbai’s Grant Road station be renamed Gamdevi, and Charni Road Girgaum.
