With the acceptance of the Commissioner there is little doubt that Navi Mumbai is going the Ulhasnagar way. Illegal construction and encroachment have become one of the biggest civic issues haunting Navi Mumbai today. Even the biggest of names and influential developers do not think twice before indulging in this a stark example being most commercial complexes in sector 19, Vashi. Today the situation seems to be going out of hand. A helpless NMMC Commissioner accepted that the massive number of illegal construction is making it difficult for his department to take action on. Not just illegal construction, but illegal change of use is another rampant feature of the city that the NMMC Encroachment has failed to arrest over the years. Commissioner Vijay Nahata says that the number is this area is over 10, 000. When questioned how his office plans to tackle this menace, the Commissioner said that a special aggressive campaign is the need of the hour. Maharashtra State Urban Development Dept.’s Principal Secretary T. C. Benjamin however cam down heavily against illegal change of use. Speaking to NMTV’s Rajeev Mishra he said that action against these illegal acts is a mess. It is not that the NMMC department misses the illegal activities. More often than not it is the influence of developers and palm greasing that helps most violators get away with illegal construction and illegal change of use. The NMMC Commissioners confession of the huge number of violations in this sector indicate that if a PIL is filed against Navi Mumbai in the court, there are chances that the city will go the Ulhasnagar way or may be even worse.
