Yet another fire in the city exposed huge violations f fire safety norms. Late midnight a major fire broke out at MIDC Pawne in one of the chemical factories taking down two companies and their godowns. What could be called as a dreadful event occurred at Pawne MIDC when a major fire broke out at midnight in one of the chemical factories named Darshan Chemicals. The fire was so fierce that it gulped down a production factory, its godown and the neighboring godowns. While the cause of the fire is yet to be investigated, the chemical godown was the main cause of the fire spreading to such an extent. Fire officers present at the site informed that the chemical drums contained methanol which is highly inflammable. Fire brigades from NMMC, MCGM TMC were called to control the fire which tool nearly eight hours to settle down. The fire officer also informed that chemical drums were placed in the open which added to the disaster. The Chief fire officer of the Navi Mumbai fire brigade informed that the factories were very close to each other which made it difficult for them to control the fire. When asked if fire violations were seen at the site, Vijay Rane informed that there were chances of it. Five persons were injured during the incident and are admitted to the NMMC hospital at Vashi. Commissioner Vijay Nahata paid a visit to the hospital. The incident has also brought to light how continuously reports of fire in the chemical belt are being reported due to gross violations of fire safety norms but the MPCB and NMMC Fire department sit on these violations as mute spectators.
